NS1106: General Chemistry
NS1106: General Chemistry
(2 Credits)Course Description:
This course introduces fundamental chemistry principles with applications in health sciences, nursing, and midwifery. Topics include atomic structure, chemical bonding, solutions, acids and bases, thermodynamics, kinetics, and an introduction to organic chemistry. Emphasis is placed on the chemical basis of life, with relevance to physiology, pharmacology, nutrition, maternal and neonatal care, and clinical practice.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain basic chemical concepts and relate them to health sciences, nursing, and midwifery practice.
- Describe atomic structure, bonding, chemical reactions, and solution chemistry.
- Apply knowledge of acids, bases, buffers, osmosis, and colligative properties in clinical contexts, including IV fluid administration.
- Relate thermodynamics, kinetics, and basic organic chemistry concepts to metabolism, pharmacology, and maternal–child health.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving in applying chemistry knowledge to patient care and health-related issues.
Required Materials:
- Textbooks: Timberlake, K.C. General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry: Structures of Life
- Lecture notes and PowerPoint slides provided by instructors.
- Scientific calculator
- Periodic table (printed or digital)
- Lab notebook or journal
