NS2101: Microbiology and Parasitology
NS2101: Microbiology and Parasitology
(2 Credits)Course Description:
This course introduces students to the principles of microbiology and parasitology relevant to nursing practice. It covers the classification, structure, and function of microorganisms, mechanisms of infection, host defense systems, and principles of infection control. Students will also study clinically significant parasites, their life cycles, and strategies for prevention and treatment.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students will:
- Identify the structure, classification, and characteristics of microorganisms and parasites.
- Learn about the mechanisms of infection, disease transmission, and host defenses.
- Explore the clinical importance of bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and helminths.
- Apply microbiological principles to infection control and nursing practice.
- Explain the role of microorganisms and parasites in disease prevention and health promotion.
Required Materials:
- Textbooks Tortora, G.J., Funke, B.R., & Case, C.L. (2019). Microbiology: An Introduction (13th ed.). Pearson.
- Lecture notes and PowerPoint slides provided by instructors.
- Access to videos, animations, and online modules for microbial and parasitic processes
- Case studies and clinical scenarios for infections and parasitic diseases
- Charts and diagrams of microbial structures, life cycles, and host-pathogen interactions
Lab Skill Resources:
