MW2202: Postnatal Care
(3 Credits)Course description
This course provides foundational knowledge and clinical skills for providing comprehensive postnatal care to mothers and newborns during the critical postpartum period, defined as the first six weeks after childbirth. Students will learn to assess, monitor, and manage common physical and psychological conditions of the mother and baby during this period. The course emphasizes evidence-based practices, early detection of complications, support for breastfeeding and maternal mental health, and health education for the family.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Describe the physiological and psychological changes in the postpartum mother and newborn.
- Perform assessments of maternal and newborn well-being during the postnatal period.
- Identify and manage common postnatal complications such as hemorrhage, infections, and postpartum depression.
- Promote exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate newborn care practices.
- Educate mothers and families on postnatal hygiene, nutrition, family planning, and warning signs.
- Develop individualized postnatal care plans, including follow-up and referrals when needed.
