Course Description:
This course explores the dynamics, causes, consequences, and responses to gender-based violence (GBV), with a focus on health, legal, cultural, and social perspectives. Students will examine the different forms of GBV—including domestic violence, sexual assault, harmful traditional practices, and conflict-related violence—while also learning strategies for prevention, survivor support, and advocacy. The course emphasizes the role of healthcare providers, community leaders, and policymakers in addressing GBV and promoting gender equity.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Define gender-based violence and describe its different forms and underlying causes.
- Analyze the social, cultural, economic, and legal factors contributing to GBV.
- Assess the short- and long-term health consequences of GBV for survivors.
- Demonstrate skills in survivor-centered care, including psychological first aid and referral mechanisms.
- Identify strategies for prevention, advocacy, and community mobilization against GBV.
- Apply international and national frameworks, policies, and laws related to GBV.
- Promote gender equality and empowerment as key strategies for GBV prevention.
