(6 Credits)Course Description:
Clinical Practical 3 provides midwifery students with comprehensive, integrated clinical experience in managing newborn care, postnatal care, reproductive and sexual health, women’s mental health, and common gynecological conditions. Students are expected to apply critical thinking and evidence-based knowledge in various clinical settings. The course also aims to strengthen students’ competence in patient-centered care, health promotion, complication management, counseling, and interprofessional collaboration. Emphasis is placed on continuity of care, clinical decision-making, and compassionate communication.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Newborn and Postnatal Care:
- Provide immediate and ongoing care for healthy and at-risk newborns.
- Monitor mothers during the postnatal period for early detection of complications.
- Support and counsel mothers on infant feeding, bonding, and family planning.
Reproductive and Sexual Health:
- Conduct reproductive health assessments and provide counseling on contraception and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
- Assist in screening and health education for cervical and breast cancer.
- Provide care for adolescent reproductive health concerns.
Mental Health in Maternity Care
- Identify signs of maternal mental health conditions (e.g., postpartum depression, anxiety, grief).
- Provide basic psychological support and refer appropriately.
Gynecological Disorders
- Recognize and assist in the management of common gynecological issues (e.g., menstrual disorders, infections, fibroids).
- Support women undergoing treatment or procedures for gynecological conditions.
Clinical Rotation Sites:
Students will rotate through the following areas:
- Postnatal Wards
- For hands-on care of mothers and newborns during the first days postpartum
- Neonatal Care Units (Basic and Intermediate)
- For care of healthy and at-risk newborns (e.g., low birth weight, feeding difficulties)
- Family Planning and Reproductive Health Clinics
- To provide counseling and services related to contraception and STIs
- Gynecology Outpatient Departments
- For exposure to common gynecological conditions, investigations, and follow-up care
- Adolescent and Youth-Friendly Health Services
- Focus on sexual and reproductive health education and care for adolescents
- Mental Health or Maternal Support Units (if available)
- Observing the assessment and referral process for mental health in the maternal period
- Community Outreach and Home Visits
- Follow-up on postnatal mothers, newborns, and reproductive health clients
