EDU 1101: PRINCIPLES O F EDUCATION
(3 Credits)Course Description
This course introduces student-teachers to the foundational principles of education, exploring its meaning, types, historical and philosophical roots, and its role in society. It integrates Islamic and Somali perspectives alongside global theories, enabling students to critically analyze the purposes and practices of education. Special attention is given to education as a human right, gender equity, and the role of mass media in shaping learning.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, female student-teachers will be able to:
- Explain the meaning, features, and processes of education.
- Differentiate between formal, informal, and non-formal types of education.
- Analyze historical contributions of different civilizations to education.
- Examine Somali educational history and current challenges.
- Understand key philosophical, sociological, and psychological perspectives of education.
- Evaluate education as a human right and its role in democracy and development.
- Discuss the impact of social factors (gender, class, ethnicity, language) on education.
- Assess the role of mass media in teaching, learning, and educational change.
- Apply theoretical perspectives to improve classroom practice and community engagement.
