- Course Description This course focusses on the peoples of the Horn of Africa in general, and the Somalis specifically. By the end of the course, students should be able to define Somali culture, socioeconomics, and ethnic relations before to independence. Course Content: Early contacts with Mediterranean, Near Eastern, and Far Eastern civilizations; the arrival of Islam, its political and cultural consequences, the colonial scramble, explorations, treaties, division, and Dervish national struggle. Establishing colonial administrations, the process of nationalism movements, and achieving independence.
