NS2102: Medical & Surgical Nursing
(4 Credits)Course Description:
This course introduces students to adult nursing care, focusing on common medical and surgical conditions. It provides a foundation for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care using the nursing process. Students will learn to manage patients with acute and chronic illnesses, preoperative and postoperative care, and apply evidence-based interventions to promote recovery, prevent complications, and ensure patient safety in hospital and community settings.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able:
- Apply nursing process to care for patients with medical and surgical conditions.
- Demonstrate knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology, and diagnostic tests relevant to adult patient care.
- Perform safe preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative nursing interventions.
- Monitor and manage patients’ fluid, electrolyte, and nutritional needs.
- Implement evidence-based nursing care for patients with respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, and endocrine disorders and Practice infection prevention, patient safety, and medication administration in all care settings.

Skills Laboratory & Clinical Materials:
- Nursing skills checklists and procedure manuals.
- Basic clinical equipment: thermometers, sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes, syringes, IV models.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE): gloves, masks, gowns, face shields.
- Sterile kits and materials for wound care, catheterization, IV insertion.
