Course Description:
This course introduces nursing students to the fundamental/ basic concepts of maternal health, focusing on prenatal care, maternal well-being, and the early maternal-newborn continuum. It emphasizes the physiological, psychosocial, and cultural aspects of pregnancy, common discomforts, high-risk pregnancy identification, basic assessment skills, and foundational postpartum awareness.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able:
- Explain the role of nurses in maternal health and the maternal-newborn continuum.
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system and its adaptations during pregnancy.
- Conduct basic maternal assessments and interpret findings for safe care planning.
- Identify common discomforts and minor complications during pregnancy and provide appropriate interventions.
- Recognize high-risk pregnancies and refer appropriately.
- Recognize early signs of labor, postpartum care priorities, and basic newborn considerations.
- Integrate theoretical knowledge into practical clinical scenarios with appropriate professional judgment.
