The Diploma in Social Science (Geography and History) program is a two-year curriculum designed to prepare female teachers with quality and pedagogical capabilities in geography and history in country.
The curriculum offers a wide range of courses in geography and history, designed to provide a well-rounded educational experience. In general, the program consists of 16 courses, 10 in geography and 6 in history, distributed over four semesters for a credential in female teacher education for Somali secondary schools.
This program is dedicated to identifying and supporting female educators specializing in teacher education of geography and history who demonstrate exceptional teaching skills, both in theoretical knowledge and practical application. By focusing on these disciplines, the initiative aims to enhance the educational landscape for secondary school students. In addition to recognizing high-performing female teachers, the program seeks to empower women in the teaching profession by providing them with opportunities for professional development and leadership. This includes mentorship, workshops, and resources tailored to strengthen their pedagogical skills and enhance their classroom effectiveness.
The program will emphasize practical methodologies in teaching geography and history, specifically targeting both hard and soft skills essential for effective instruction in social studies. By prioritizing hands-on teaching techniques, the initiative aims to equip educators with the tools necessary to engage students actively and foster a deeper understanding of these critical subjects
The program will incorporate a variety of experiential learning strategies that encourage inquiry, discussion, and critical thinking. Educators will be trained to implement project-based learning, field studies, and interactive simulations that bring geographical and historical concepts to life. This approach not only enhances student engagement but also helps learners connect theoretical knowledge to real-world applications.

Program Rationale |
Scarcity of female instructors: Historical data and educational assessments in Somalia continually show a chronic scarcity of trained female teachers, notably in the secondary geography curriculum. This disparity impedes girls’ education (since female students frequently benefit from female role models) and restricts national competence in a crucial subject. The Strategic Focus on Geography: Geography is unusual in that it connects the physical sciences (environment, climate, geology) and the social sciences (culture, economy, politics, and development). This interdisciplinary viewpoint is critical for comprehending Somalia’s multifaceted difficulties, which range from climate vulnerability and resource management to urbanization, regional dynamics, and sustainable development. |
